Java 8/9: AMA (Ask Me Anything!)

vJUG-speaker-interview-button-1     vJUG-similar-content-button-1

An AMA session is literally where you can ask Java experts ANYTHING you would like about the current Java 8 version or upcoming Java 9 release! That’s right, ANYTHING! 🙂 Whether or not they answer of course is another question!

To ask questions, either turn up and ping a question into the IRC chat during the session, or ask in advance (recommended) on our Java 8/9 AMA forum topic.

Our panel has been carefully picked so we have a broad representation, including an Oracle Java guru, an Azul Java master, a figurehead in the community and a legend! Ladies and gentlemen, your panel:

Speakers: Stuart Marks, Simon Ritter, Bruno Souza and Venkat Subramaniam

Stuart Marks is a Principal Member of Technical Staff in the Java Platform Group at Oracle. He is currently working on a variety of JDK core libraries projects, including Collections, Lambda, and Streams, as well as improving test quality and performance. He has previously worked on JavaFX and Java ME at Sun Microsystems. He has over twenty years of software platform product development experience in the areas of window systems, interactive graphics, and mobile and embedded systems. Stuart holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science and a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.

Simon Ritter is the Deputy CTO of Azul Systems. Simon has been in the IT business since 1984 and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Brunel University in the U.K. Originally working in the area of UNIX development for AT&T UNIX System Labs and then Novell, Simon moved to Sun in 1996. At this time, he started working with Java technology and has spent time working both in Java development and consultancy. Having moved to Oracle as part of the Sun acquisition, he focused on developer outreach for the core Java platform, Java for client applications and embedded Java. Now at Azul he is helping the Java community to understand Azul?s Java virtual machine technologies and products.

Bruno Souza is a Java developer and open source evangelist at Summa Technologies and a cloud expert at ToolsCloud. Nurturing developer communities is a personal passion; Souza works actively with Java, NetBeans, Open Solaris, OFBiz, and many other open source communities. As founder and coordinator of SouJava (The Java Users Society), one of the world’s largest Java User Groups, Souza has led the expansion of the Java movement in Brazil. Founder of the Worldwide Java User Groups Community, he has helped create and organize hundreds of JUGs worldwide.

A Java Developer since the early days, Souza participates in some of the largest Java projects in Brazil. He is also director of the Open Source Initiative (OSI), president of the innovation-focused Campus Party Institute, and coordinator of Nuvem, the Cloud Computing Lab of LSI/USP. When not in front of a computer, Souze enjoys time with his family in a little hideout near São Paulo. An amateur in many things—photographer, puppeteer, father—he strives to be good in some of them.

Dr. Venkat Subramaniam is an award-winning author, founder of Agile Developer, Inc., and an instructional professor at the University of Houston. He has trained and mentored thousands of software developers in the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia, and is a regularly-invited speaker at several international conferences. Venkat helps his clients effectively apply and succeed with agile practices on their software projects. Venkat is a (co)author of multiple books, including the 2007 Jolt Productivity award winning book Practices of an Agile Developer. His latest book is Functional Programming in Java: Harnessing the Power of Java 8 Lambda Expressions. You can reach him by email at venkats@agiledeveloper.com or on twitter at @venkat_s.
